**Warning: May contain spoilers for the Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows movie**
This won’t be a review of the latest Harry Potter film that we saw last Friday as many of my friends have not seen it yet and I don’t want to ruin it for them. And most of them haven’t read the book too so I guess I’ll have them spend money to watch the movie just like I did.
Someone died in the movie and the death scene in the book that spanned at least a few pages was condensed into only a few movie minutes but it was still intense – and my daughter sitting beside me started sobbing, however, quietly. She did not know or expect, after all that someone will die. My mother who was with us in the movie house started saying, “C’mon now, it’s just a movie, hush, hush, don’t cry…. There, there, stop now.”
Pristine was trying to wipe her tears and choked on her misery.
I scooped her up from her seat and sat her in my lap – as to keep distance from my mother. I told her it’s ok to cry, to let out her emotions. Just cry it out. And boy she did, my shirt sleeve was wet before the movie credit rolled in.
Children (in some cultures or maybe only in my family?) are always asked to stop crying if they are sad when watching sad movies. But why? Growing up, I’ve always muffled my cries because of the ït’s just a movie” comment. But now, as a parent myself, I wonder, what is wrong with crying? I’ve decided when I become a parent, I won’t prevent or stop my child/children from crying when they are sad. I won’t suppress or let them suppress their emotions inside.
How about you, what do you when children sob during sad movies? Do you stop them or hand them the tissue (or shirt sleeve) and give them a big hug?
Finding Backroads 
As an adult, it shames me everytime I cry when struck with movie scenes/lines esp when I’m with people who don’t seem affected. As a child, I never cared how people around me thought of me. I was never asked to stop crying by my parents as far as I could remember. My mother cries too but quickly wipes it off.
To ur question, I think just like ur mom, I’ll tell my child that it’s just a movie (perhaps, she thinks it’s real). I’ll hug her and wipe her tears but probably won’t ask her to stop crying. I think it’s alright to let her express her emotions through tears but she has to know for sure that what’s happening isn’t for real.
Personally, I appreciate kids who cry at the sight/sound of sensitive things, it makes me certain that they understood what’s happening and makes me feel they have a heart.

I wonder if you feel the same way about crying if you had a boy.
When my 4-year old Matthew cries, even though I know the reason, I ask him why. I let him talk it out in between sobs. But usually he’s reason for crying is he doesn’t want to do what I tell him to do, like pick up his toys. Or when he’s not getting what he wants. Crying for these reasons are unacceptable.

As for sad movies, I don’t think I’d stop kids to cry over sad movies, sad scenes, afterall I cry over sad movies. But I won’t encourage them to keep on crying even after the scene or the movie is over, but rather than saying “It’s just a movie.”, I’d say “Stop crying. It’s over now.”
Also, depends on the cry – hysterical crying over a movie, no matter how sad it is, is just silly!

Why should they feel bad that they have emotions? I think it’s good for a children to be able to cry and not have someone tell them to shush.
I think I read somewhere that crying can even benefit your health, so there you go lets your children cry 🙂

I am a big fan of the series. I read all the books and watched all the movies (I always end up disappointed but I keep coming back). When I watched the movie last Sunday, I cried big rolling tears just like when I read it in the book. I am a self-confessed crybaby and think it’s okay. Whenever I watch an emotional scene in any movie I watch, I start crying but I was never ashamed that I do. I guess some people are just like that. Thanks for this one! Btw, I think this HP installment is one of the coolest.

There is a big difference between crying in a movie because it’s sad and crying because it’s frightening. I remember my mother having to take me out of the Wizard of Oz when I was little. The witch and the flying monkeys scared the heck out of me.

I wil cry endlessly when that character dies in the last movie in 2011. I will cry buckets and buckets. I really like how Rowling is so brave as to kill on of the beloved characters and challenge the usual accepted norm that good people in movies will be battered but will always be victorious in the end.
He will die and my heart will sob with Harry’s. What a great epic this has been though, I have been thoroughly entertained throughout the years. It is so amazing you get to share this with your daughter!

I admit I’m a cry baby so when movies make me cry, it’s no surprise to my friends at all. It maybe shameful to some but they’re used to it and it’s not a big deal. I’m just soft hearted and easily gets carried away! LOL

For me, it didn’t matter if movies make you cry. It’s natural to be attached sometimes. Children are the ones usually gets so emotional but as an adult, I admit I’m a kid at heart!
