Mongolian Beef

I had been posting recipes of Japanese food because I mainly cook Japanese at home and also, because I am married to one. Don’t let the title mislead you though, that I have taken a second husband who’s Mongolian.

Thing is, we ate out and the husband ordered Mongolian beef. It was good that I had to stop, look, stare at it more and thought of how to replicate it at home.

Ingredients:

  • 300 grams beef – flank steak would be good but I had rib eye so I used it
  • 2 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 2 Tbsp sesame oil
  • chinese cabbage, snow peas, onions

Sauce:

  • 1/2 c water
  • 1/2 c soy sauce (I use Kikkoman)
  • brown sugar – white is also ok if you don’t have brown
  • 5 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbsp minced ginger
  • oil

Procedure:

SAUCE

1. Heat a little oil in fry pan and saute minced garlic and ginger.

2. Add water and soy sauce.

3. When it boils, add sugar. Start from 2 Tbsp and go from there. You decide how sweet you want it to be. I ended up using about 3 Tbsp. Mix well.

4. Simmer for about 2 minutes and set aside.

MAIN

1. Slice the beef against the grain by tilting the blade of your knife at about 45 degree angle. Cut into bite sizes you prefer.

2. Dip the steak pieces into the cornstarch, without getting your hands dirty, like what I did in the Teriyaki Chicken recipe. Leave for 10 minutes so that the cornstarch sticks.

3. Heat sesame oil in pan and stir fry the cornstarch coated beef pieces. Stir constantly so all sides are no longer red/pink. Set aside in one corner of the pan.

4. Add sliced onions and stir constantly. When onions become translucent, mix together with the beef.

5. Pour the sauce over the beef and onions. Simmer for 5 minutes. The sauce is less watery right now because of the cornstarch.

6. Add the vegetables. Simmer for a while until vegetables are cooked.

Note: The original menu we had did not have vegetables except leeks but this is my version. I just felt like having vegetables in this one. And isn’t vegetable a good addition to our lives?

7. Serve hot with rice.

Sorry for the lack of step by step photos. I cooked this in a weekday morning when I’m like being chased by a big, bad wolf. The husband and the child brought this in their lunch boxes and they both came home with an empty box and a huge smile on their faces.

  1. Grace that looks delicious. Interesting how we go from one article on weight loss to an article on FOOD. I have convinced my wife to make pizza tonight. Her’s is so much better than the pizzerias around here, but she doesn’t like making it. She owes me though as I cooked all week.
