Free iftar meals during Ramadan

As the evening call for prayer reverberate in all of the land signalling the end of the full day fast for Muslims, Ramadan tents situated in various mosques all over the country come to life. Ramadan is indeed the month of giving because several charity organizations offer free Iftar food for everyone at the tents near the mosques.

Well, basically for those less privileged but when you see the men (I have not seen women line up at the Ramadan tents) quietly queueing to get their free meal, you’ll find out that these people aren’t necessary those ‘less fortunate’, they are there to take part in breaking their fast after prayers with other people, enjoying the essence of Ramadan.

My curious husband came home with this yesterday and told his free Iftar meal story.

The meal box contained a salad, slices of arabic bread, dates (not shown), laban drink (yoghurt drink), an apple and a main meal with Arabic flavored rice (with raisins and nuts) and ragan josh (spicy lamb stew).

He passed by a mosque around the time when fasting was over, saw the bustling Ramadan tent and went in. Of course people were looking at him strangely (a man in business suit wouldn’t exactly fit there) but he didn’t mind. And I need to blog about it so he went. Ha ha.

  1. Just popped by to see what was new. Always really interesting especially the meal. I love Indian food, so I would imagine I would like the food over there too, especially all the different kinds of bread. I’m tying to get rid of a couple of pounds too so no CTM for me right now, for the uninitiated that’s Chicken Tikka Masala, mind you in Canada the old Butter Chicken ranks No.1 I think. I’d better stop I’m drooling on my keyboard!! Latest book recommendation is Mad, Bad and Dangerous by Sir Ranulph Fiennes. If you want to read something that’s motivational and exciting this is it. One of the things he did other than go to both Poles and climb the North Face of the Eiger was 7 marathons in 7 days on 7 continents. If that doesn’t get us off the couch I don’t know what will. Really enjoy your posts. Thanks
