Color me black

candle

I was going out for work two days ago, my mom looked at me head to foot and said, “are you going to a funeral?” I was dressed in black – from head band, blouse, trousers, belt and shoes. I wear black but it must be the first time I was in full solid black getup in many months/years. My mother on the other hand detest wearing it because it signifies death and mourning and wearing would be like inviting death over to have a cup of coffee with you.

I bet Angelina Jolie doesn’t agree with her.

When I came home that afternoon, I immediately smelled flowers when I opened the car door. I looked around – there were no flowers but just sprawling sand in the vacant desert lot in front of our apartment building. This is Dubai (Middle East) where fragrant flowers just don’t spring anywhere.

Yesterday, I heard the news that my last living grandparent is gone. My father’s father had left us.

I don’t know what to say. I was able to talk to him for the last time over the phone just last month when he was in the hospital. I had hoped that conversation would not be the last. The last time I saw him was more than ten years ago and I have planned to visit him again as soon as I get to the Philippines. I guess that trip won’t be necessary anymore.

Tomorrow and some couple of days to come, I will be wearing all black again.

Rest in peace, Lolo Basilio. I hope you are happy wherever you are and reunited with Grandma.

  4. condolences Grace.
I also still do have a bit of your mom’s belief in me, so if i like to wear full-black get-up, I say a little prayer first for my family and relative’s health & safety, call me superficial.

  5. Aw Grace, I’m so sorry to hear about your grandfather’s passing-It happens so suddenly and you really don’t have time to wrap your head around it.
My great aunt passed at the end of March and my brain still thinks she’s alive. I really hope you and your family can find peace in this difficult time.
