Early morning camels

We passsed by a camel race course just outside the city on our way to Al Ain Zoo (in another post) and found camel caretakers taking the camels for a walk…or a run? It’s still early in the morning but they are all up and about.

We slowed down to the camels pace then went ahead, circled the race track to catch them at the end line.

They were friendly enough to greet us. The camels are brightly dressed. I wonder if it’s protection from the cold? It’s still cold in the early mornings in the desert.

While we walked away, we met some camel jockeys on their way to work. They asked me to take their photo but with Pristine. My little girl happily obliged.

One of the camel caretakers showed off an amazing skill: standing on top of the camel while it is moving! It’s a dangerous stunt! When you’re sitting on a camel you’re lifted up so high, even higher than when riding horses so I can only imagine how scary it is to stand on it.

Camels are always fun to watch and this is the first time we’ve seen camels for racing this close. One of the caretakers bade us goodbye:

Taking place twice a week on Thursdays and Fridays during the winter months, camel racing in Dubai is an event, which should not be missed on your Dubai Tour.

  1. Oh my goodness, how awesome! I have never even seen pictures of camel races, this is fabulous.

This is not actually the race..just practice. 🙂
I’ve not seen the actual race too since it is done very early in the morning and we live a little bit far but definitely will check it out next winter!
